Free community activity program is launched
The Toowoomba region’s first free community activity program will officially kick off in March.
The new 12-month program, Energise, aims to promote fun, fitness and friendships amongst members of local communities.
From March onwards, free activities will be offered at indoor and outdoor venues in Toowoomba, Clifton, Crows Nest, Highfields, Goombungee, Millmerran, Oakey and Pittsworth.
Activities on offer in March include yoga, tai chi, mums and bubs exercise class, circuit training, social tennis, martial arts, 50 years plus fitness group and dance and drama classes for young people.
The signature event for the program will be its street basketball competition which will encourage young people in various Toowoomba suburbs to meet in the streets for a game.
New activities will also be regularly added to the program to suit everyone’s taste and ability. Energise is a Commonwealth funded project through the Department of Health and Ageing’s Healthy Active Australia Community and Schools grant program.
The program will be delivered in the Toowoomba region by the Darling Downs Population Health Unit, Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation, Queensland Health, Safer Toowoomba Partnership Inc. and Toowoomba Regional Council.
Energise has appointed John Minz, Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Building Society as its official program ambassador.
Mr Minz said he was delighted to be involved in a program that is the first-of-its kind for the region. “Energise is all about being active, meeting new friends and living life to its fullest,” he said.
“My family and I try to live this philosophy, so I was honoured to be chosen as the Energise Ambassador.
“The great part about Energise is that it offers free community based activities that cater for everyone in the community no matter what your interest or ability.
“Any program that is designed to promote active living, a healthy lifestyle and community spirit gets my tick of approval,” he said.
